Wayne County Reads 2008
OUR 2008 SCHEDULE: Monday, Feb. 11, 7 p.m., Murphy Center, Mount Olive College, English Professor Dee Clere will lead a discussion of the book. Thursday, Feb. 14, noon-1 p.m., Gertrude Weil Auditorium, Wayne County Public Library. Liz Meader, a retired English instructor and a Goldsboro News-Argus columnist, will lead a discussion of the book for area book clubs and the public. People are welcome to bring their lunches.

Thursday, Jan. 17, 5 p.m. Arts Council of Wayne County, 2406 E. Ash St. Opening reception with display of Wayne County students's artwork with theme of "Sunday with Family and Friends"; storytelling by Grandaddy Junebug. Performance begins at 6 p.m.

Billy Stevens, a musician/entertainer/historian, lectures on "Sincere Forms of Flattery: Blacks, Whites and American Popular Music." John Dee Holeman, a jazz and blues musician from Durham, will perform. Sponsored by the N.C. Humanities Council's "Roads Scholar Project."
Friday, Feb. 8, 7 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 10, 3 p.m., Music Room, Second floor, Dogwood Building, Wayne Community College, 3000 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro.
"A Portrait of a People: A Survey of African American Poetry" will feature local residents performing poetry. C. Rose Howard compiled the material for the show, which will be produced by Margaret Boothe Baddour. Family-friendly event.

"Mighty Times: The Legacy of Rose Parks" film, the 2003 Academy Award-nominated documentary on civil rights leader Rose Parks, will be shown followed by a discussion led by WCPL Children's Librarian Shorlette Ammons-Stephens. Refreshments will be served. Family-friendly event.
Thursday, Feb. 14, 7 p.m., Seymour Johnson Air Force Base Library, Darell Vickers, director of Fayetteville State University's base program, will lead a discussion of the book for base personnel and others with base access.

Trudier Harris, a faculty member of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and author of Autumn Snow: Reflections of a Black Daughter of the South, will talk about the role of black women in the book Blood Done Sign My Name, in the Civil Rights era, and now. Sponsored by the UNC Alumni Association and the Wayne County Carolina Club.

Gene Roberts, a Wayne County native, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author of The Race Beat: The Press, the Civil Rights Struggle and the Awakening of a Nation, will speak, followed by a reception and book signing.

Monday, Feb. 25, 7 p.m., Rebuilding Broken Places, 2105 N. William St. Panel discussion on the Civil Rights era in Goldsboro and surrounding areas. Panelists are expected to include the Rev. Vernon Tyson, Tim Tyson's father and featured in Blood Done Sign My Name, and Wayne County residents.
