Our companyThe history of Mary grove does not begin with 1927 or the city of Detroit, but with 1845 and the town of Monroe. On November 10, 1845,three religious congregations of Catholic women nuns came to Monroe at the invitation of a young Belgian missionary priest,

Father Louis Florin Gillette. One of the women named Theresa Maxis was the first leader of the new community. A woman of Haitian origin, she had formerly served as president of the Oblate Sisters of Providence, a black community of Catholic women in Baltimore, Maryland. On Christmas day a noticed appeared in the Monroe Advocate announcing the opening of a ‘Young Ladies Academy ‘offering a course of study that included French and English grammar, arithmetic, mythology, bookkeeping, needlework, beadwork, tapestry, worsted flowers, and music. By 15 of January, 1846, St. Mary Academy welcomed its first batch of students.

The Service Learning Program at Mary grove co-curricular in nature and provides an opportunity for students to maximize their learning experiences while living out the college’s mission and commitment to social justice. Community service used as a means of understanding course concepts and personal intervention when addressing social issues. The learning program requires community agency site while fulfilling the objectives of that course. Service learning in any experience in which students have intentional learning goals and actively reflect on what they are learning throughout the experience.
