Founded in Detroit in 1919 by the Most Rev. Michael J. Gallagher for the reason of educating men for the priesthood.On February 1923 for a permanent seminary ground was broken in location on 17 acres of farmland located at the corner of Chicago

Blvd.and Linwood. On June 17, 1923, a Detroit Times article reported ‘Thousands watched the lying of the cornerstone of the new Sacred Heart Seminary. “With a beginning of first degree class, starting in year 1926, Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit serves one of the largest Archdioceses in the U.S., with a Catholic population of 1.46 million Catholics. Over 400 students and 93 seminarians (2006-2007) are enrolled in classes through the seminary. They are drawn from the cultural mosaic of the U.S, global community. There are women and men, clergy and lay, resident seminarians and commuters, young, middle-aged and senior students. Some are full-time courses, and many are part-time.

1. Communication and Latin Language Arts- Integrated Reading and Writing,Rhetoric (intensive practice in reading and writing expository and descriptive prose), Introduction to Oral Communication and Interpretation.Introductory to intermediate Latin I and II,Directed Readings in Latin Literature I and II.
2. Ministry Studies -Theology of Ministry, Introduction to Pastoral Counseling and Catechetic, Multicultural Perspectives includes Canon Law for Parish Ministers, Marriage and Nullity in Canon Law, Liturgical Prayer of the Church, Catechetical and Faith Development.
3. Music programs, Philosophy and Theology studies.

It also indulges in Academic programs like Associate of Arts in Ministry (A.A.M.),  
Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Philosophy, Diploma in Music Ministry, Pastoral Ministry, Baccalaureate and Licentiate in Sacred Theology.
Some master degrees include Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies M.A.P.S, masters of Arts in theology (M.A) and Divinity (M.Div.), Permanent Diaconate is a type of program which can be completed at the graduate or undergraduate level, is partial fulfillment.
